But only 20 years later, in February 1974, President Nixon declared National Nurses Week every year from May 6 to May 12. Along with this, May 12 was also celebrated as Nurses Day.
Nurses Day marks the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, who is known as the founder of modern nursing. Florence Nightingale, a social reformer, statistician and founder of Modern Nursing, was also born on 12 May. The first International Nurses Day was celebrated in 1965.
Florence Nightingale is remembered around the world as the “Lady with the Lamp”. Florence Nightingale cares for wounded soldiers of the British Army and their allies during the Crimean War. Florence Nightingale not only set the standards of health care and nursing in medical camps and hospitals during the war. In 1860 the Nightingale Training School was also established at St Thomas’ Hospital to train aspiring nurses and health workers.
