The theme of Nurses Day for the year 2022 is “Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Invest in Nursing and Other Rights to Secure Global Health”.
In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland of the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare proposed to the then president to declare Nurses Day in October. However, the proposal was not approved. Subsequently, Frances P. Bolton, the first woman elected to Congress from Ohio, also sponsored a bill for “National Nurses Week”. But only 20 years later, in February 1974, President Nixon declared National Nurses Week every year from May 6 to May 12. Along with this, May 12 was also celebrated as Nurses Day.
Nurses Day marks the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, who is known as the founder of modern nursing. Florence Nightingale, a social reformer, statistician and founder of Modern Nursing, was also born on 12 May. The first International Nurses Day was celebrated in 1965.
Florence Nightingale is remembered around the world as the “Lady with the Lamp”. Florence Nightingale cares for wounded soldiers of the British Army and their allies during the Crimean War. Florence Nightingale not only set the standards of health care and nursing in medical camps and hospitals during the war. In 1860 the Nightingale Training School was also established at St Thomas’ Hospital to train aspiring nurses and health workers. Remember that Queen Victoria of England, influenced by the Lady with the Lamp, sent her eldest son, Edward VII, on a royal tour to Bettiah West Champaran, India, between 1875 and 1876, with the aim of revolutionizing the world of education and service to humanity. .
